This historic home – the first occupied residence in historic Biltmore Forest – had seen no improvements since its construction in 1923. The owners wanted to update the residence while also having it listed on the National Register of Historic Places, creating a special challenge for S.B. Coleman Construction.
To stay within strict NRHP guidelines, the company had to replicate the original materials and design for each project, working extensively with materials such as slate roofing and floors, guillotine cut stone, stucco, and copper guttering.
Exterior work included: • Replacing all slate roofs • Replacing all exterior timber, which had been damaged by bore bees and woodpeckers • Softening the appearance of the estate by moving the circular driveway away from the front door and developing a garden experience between the driveway and the main house • Adding a single-paver driveway • Creating formal gardens and moving 23 trees – each exceeding 22 feet in height – to different areas of the property
Work in the living areas included: • Adding a seventh fireplace • Building a 427 square-foot Morning Room • Constructing an 1,000 square-foot exterior porch • Replacing all plumbing and electrical wiring • Adding an air conditioner to heat and cool the house • Rebuilding all six of the existing outbuildings to include a guest house
